Yoga is unique and personal to everyone. One-to-one yoga, taught by Live and Breathe Yoga director Allison Dearling, enables you to explore a personal yoga practice that is truly your own. A senior yoga teacher and yoga therapist with 25 years’ practice and 20 years’ experience in yoga teaching, Allison can design you a personal practice that will change your life.

The new yogi

You’ve never done yoga before, or have very limited experience, and are keen to do it right. You want a solid understanding of the key yoga poses, and want to learn how to make your own adjustments so that the pose fits you perfectly. One-to-one yoga can help you build the confidence to thrive in group classes, plus establish your own regular home practise.

My initial thoughts about starting yoga was that it probably wouldn’t help my physical pain much but it would help mentally. I enjoyed the last part of the sessions the most. Calming down and doing a small meditation helped me relax for the rest of the day. I noticed my lower back pain went away pretty quickly. That’s when I realised yoga can really help me. It took a while for me to feel the pain in my left shoulder subside. But it did eventually. I would absolutely recommend people to work with Allison. She is incredibly kind and very skilled in yoga/ rehabilitation practices. I truly don’t think I would be at the level of pain management I have without her help. Overall, it was a really great experience and I truly feel yoga is for anyone now!

I was initially skeptical, as I came from a military background, I thought yoga was only for hippies. I couldn’t have been any more wrong. The feeling of instant calm was what I enjoyed most. Also, the rehabilitation, to reduce my pain from chronic pain that I couldn’t get rid of. The fact I went from major spinal issues to having custom lessons, to give me pain free days. To be able to sit on the floor pain free, to move without fear and pain and to relax was how these sessions helped me immensely. I would definitely recommend Allison; anyone can do this and the one-to-one sessions were amazing, designed for me personally by a professional. It’s more than just about breathing, it’s about movement and learning control of your body.

I was anxious about starting a group class as I had no idea what I was doing. So decided to do the one to one classes with Allison. She took the time every session to see how I was feeling and what might need some extra focus work on. i.e shoulder pain etc. Then because it was just the two of us, she had the ability to really teach me and take the time to show me how to improve. I think that one on one engagement was key for my situation, and I would not have had the same experience in a group. What I noticed straight away was how stiff and locked up my body was. My pain slowly went away in areas of my body that I had had constant problems with. After a while I could tell that if I didn’t do the things, we practiced in class I would have pain. It was very notable. Personally, the biggest thing that I have taken away from this experience with Allison, is my mindset. She has had a profound impact on my life and when we first started, I was very stressed and quiet simply not in a good headspace. Some of the breathing techniques she has passed on to me and along with other techniques have changed my life. I am so grateful to have had the experience with Allison at Live and Breathe yoga, she has changed my life and I am so thankful.

About senior teacher Allison Dearling

With over 20 years of teaching and 25 years of practice, Allison is a popular, down-to-earth Mount Isa born but world traveler, with a dry sense of humour and a passion for yoga that is hard to beat. With a Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy, Allison loves working one-to-one with people for therapeutic and rehabilitative yoga, to find balance, ease and healing.

Depending on your needs and interest levels, private yoga can introduce you to the authentic practice of traditional yoga, including meditation,  visualisation, chanting, breathing practices (pranayama) and yoga postures.

Allison discovered the rigours of Ashtanga Yoga following a serious car accident as a teenager, when she used yoga to support her rehabilitation throughout her early 20s.

In 2002, Allison travelled to Scotland for a year and stayed for seven, eventually bringing home her future husband Harry, to settle in beautiful Townsville.

After a career in accounting and working in the television industry in Glasgow, Allison became an enthusiastic student, travelling four times to Mysore, India (the home of Ashtanga yoga) and studying with many teachers in the US, the UK and Australia. She is a senior yoga teacher accredited with Yoga Australia, and is also certified in yoga therapy and pranayama breathwork.

The private lessons with Allison enable me to learn more about not only yoga, but also myself and my body. She has assisted me to understand and manage my injuries, by giving specific preparatory exercises. How it works

You don’t have to be located in Townsville to take advantage of one-to-one yoga with us! We offer online one-to-one sessions with students across Australia, including one-to-one yoga teacher mentoring for new and established teachers.

One-to-one yoga is a minimum 6 session commitment over 8 weeks. This minimum commitment period is to give you the best possible opportunity to be familiar, confident and established in your yoga practice.

Our first session together will include a detailed assessment and discussion of what you’re looking for in a yoga practice.

Then we get together once a week, to help establish your regular yoga practice and make it work for your life, NOT as an adjacent hobby that gets dropped as soon as life crowds in. Because, let’s face it, life always crowds in. One-to-one yoga enables you to establish a confident private practice that caters to your unique needs, and evolves as you, your body and mind evolve. This is a lifestyle that will support you, for decades to come.

Yoga is a powerful practice, but it’s not a magic pill. Like all good things, it requires tiny, everyday habit changes that create a significant compounding effect over time. But have no doubt – a regular yoga practice creates a ripple effect that is both profound and enduring.
