One-to-one yoga

Yoga is unique and personal to everyone. One-to-one yoga, taught by Live and Breathe Yoga director Allison Dearling, enables you to explore a personal yoga practise that is truly your own. A senior yoga teacher and yoga therapist with 23 years’ practise and 18 years’ experience in yoga teaching, Allison can design you a personal practise that will change your life.

The new yogi

You’ve never done yoga before, or have very limited experience, and are keen to do it right. You want a solid understanding of the key yoga poses, and want to learn how to make your own adjustments so that the pose fits you perfectly. One-to-one yoga can help you build the confidence to thrive in group classes, plus establish your own regular home practise.

My initial thoughts about starting yoga was that it probably wouldn’t help my physical pain much but it would help mentally. I enjoyed the last part of the sessions the most. Calming down and doing a small meditation helped me relax for the rest of the day. I noticed my lower back pain went away pretty quickly. That’s when I realised yoga can really help me. It took a while for me to feel the pain in my left shoulder subside. But it did eventually. I would absolutely recommend people to work with Allison. She is incredibly kind and very skilled in yoga/ rehabilitation practices. I truly don’t think I would be at the level of pain management I have without her help. Overall, it was a really great experience and I truly feel yoga is for anyone now!

The injured yogi

You’ve had an injury or are managing a chronic conditions and you want to avoid flareups, while enjoying the benefits that yoga has to offer for rehabilitation and pain management. Regardless of how severe or mild your injury or condition is, one-to-one yoga with Allison can utilise yoga therapy to ensure that you’re moving safely, and experiencing yoga’s powerful benefits

Working one to one with Allison was a no-brainer for me. As my yoga teacher for over 10 years, her support in studio classes is fantastic. Having the option for personalized support in my yoga practice and life was a definite sign-up for me. As an interstate student now, the opportunity to catch up once a month is great. Allison’s vibrant, positive, nurturing, and supportive energy keeps me inspired and helps me get back on track when things go off course. These sessions were especially helpful during my recovery from surgery, as Allison tailored a practice to meet my physical and mental needs. I appreciate having the time to address posture questions and work on specific areas in my body. Allison has been a tremendous source of strength for me, offering a listening ear, supportive words, and hugs during challenging times. She has also provided tips and tricks to help me organize myself and set myself up for success off the mat. I highly recommend working 1:1 with Allison. Her knowledge, support, and nurturing nature will help you thrive both on and off the mat.

The busy yogi

You have a lot going on, and you know that yoga is invaluable for managing your stress, keeping you focused, and just making life (far) better! One-to-one yoga ensures that when life gets particularly hectic, you’re not dropping your yoga practise but instead, doubling down on the healthy habits that support you to keep all the balls in the air.

I was initially skeptical, as I came from a military background, I thought yoga was only for hippies. I couldn’t have been any more wrong. The feeling of instant calm was what I enjoyed most. Also, the rehabilitation, to reduce my pain from chronic pain that I couldn’t get rid of. The fact I went from major spinal issues to having custom lessons, to give me pain free days. To be able to sit on the floor pain free, to move without fear and pain and to relax was how these sessions helped me immensely. I would definitely recommend Allison; anyone can do this and the one-to-one sessions were amazing, designed for me personally by a professional. It’s more than just about breathing, it’s about movement and learning control of your body.

The private yogi

You’re a private person who sometimes feels overwhelmed in a group. You prefer the intimacy of one-to-one yoga with a trusted teacher who you can go deep into your practise with. This enables you to explore the many rich facets of yoga through a tailored approach designed specifically for you.

I was anxious about starting a group class as I had no idea what I was doing. So decided to do the one to one classes with Allison. She took the time every session to see how I was feeling and what might need some extra focus work on. i.e shoulder pain etc. Then because it was just the two of us, she had the ability to really teach me and take the time to show me how to improve. I think that one on one engagement was key for my situation, and I would not have had the same experience in a group. What I noticed straight away was how stiff and locked up my body was. My pain slowly went away in areas of my body that I had had constant problems with. After a while I could tell that if I didn’t do the things, we practiced in class I would have pain. It was very notable. Personally, the biggest thing that I have taken away from this experience with Allison, is my mindset. She has had a profound impact on my life and when we first started, I was very stressed and quiet simply not in a good headspace. Some of the breathing techniques she has passed on to me and along with other techniques have changed my life. I am so grateful to have had the experience with Allison at Live and Breathe yoga, she has changed my life and I am so thankful.

About senior teacher Allison Dearling

With over 18 years of teaching and 23 years of practice, Allison is a popular, down-to-earth Mount Isa local, with a dry sense of humour. With a Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy, Allison loves working one-to-one with people for therapeutic and rehabilitative yoga, to find balance, ease and healing.

Depending on your needs and interest levels, private yoga can introduce you to the authentic practise of traditional yoga, including meditation, Ayurveda (wholefoods for healing), visualisation, chanting, breathing practises (pranayama) and yoga therapy.

Allison discovered the rigours of Ashtanga Yoga following a serious car accident as a teenager, when she used yoga to support her rehabilitation throughout her early 20s.

In 2002, Allison travelled to Scotland for a year and stayed for seven, eventually bringing home her future husband Harry, to settle in beautiful Townsville.

After a career in accounting and working in the television industry in Glasgow, Allison became an enthusiastic student, travelling four times to Mysore, India (the home of Ashtanga yoga) and studying with many teachers in the US, the UK and Australia. She is a senior yoga teacher accredited with Yoga Australia, and is also certified in yoga therapy and pranayama breathwork.

The private lessons with Allison enable me to learn more about not only yoga, but also myself and my body. She has assisted me to understand and manage my injuries, by giving specific preparatory exercises. Allison’s ability to reflect on my practice, coupled with her explanations and demonstrations, bring a direct improvement to my yoga practice and knowledge. I feel more confident, more capable, more energised and more committed to my practice. I have seen my strength increase, my ability improve and my knowledge deepen. Allison has an amazing knack for knowing what I need to change and do – and each lesson is tailored to my needs and ability. I highly recommend private lessons with Allison – I just know that you’ll love it (and benefit), as much as I do!

How it works

You don’t have to be located in Townsville to take advantage of one-to-one yoga with us! We offer online one-to-one sessions with students across Australia, including one-to-one yoga teacher mentoring for new and established teachers.

One-to-one yoga is a minimum three month commitment of twice per month, deducted  automatically per month from your credit card. This minimum commitment period is to give you the best possible opportunity to be familiar, confident and established in your yoga practise.

Our first session together will include a detailed assessment and discussion of what you’re looking for in a yoga practice.

Then we get together twice a month, to help establish your regular yoga practise and make it work for your life, NOT as an adjacent hobby that gets dropped as soon as life crowds in. Because, let’s face it, life always crowds in. One-to-one yoga enables you to establish a confident private practise that caters to your unique needs, and evolves as you, your body and mind evolve. This is a lifestyle that will support you, for decades to come.

Yoga is a powerful practise, but it’s not a magic pill. Like all good things, it requires tiny, everyday habit changes that create a significant compounding effect over time. But have no doubt – a regular yoga practise creates a ripple effect that is both profound and enduring.

Private Package

(6 sessions)
$250 per month

This is a minimum commitment of 6 sessions over 3 months. After that you can choose to continue with more sessions or join the regular classes.

Arguably the best yoga studio in Townsville and probably all of QLD! I knew that this was the yoga studio for me once I'd read Allison's blogs. I felt a sense of connection and community with the yoga studio before I'd even begun my first class. Coffee every Saturday makes it more than just a yoga studio but a place where you below and connect with like-minded people. Definitely recommend!

I met the Live and Breathe Yoga family just this year in my recovery from breast cancer. Allison and our team of coaches are amazing. They are gifted and super experienced and also kind and inclusive. I have not done this before and my inexperience and clumsiness is welcomed. They truly shower you in love and light and provide brilliant expertise and unwavering support to believe in your ability. The biggest bonus for me is being part of a true community of non-judgemental women and men while I get to fulfil my dream of practising yoga for the first time in my life, building strength and wellness for life, getting complete relief from physical and spiritual pain and knowing that there are no limits to the feeling of peace and centredness you gain from Yoga. All this amongst friends while having a giggle. You need to join us!

THE BEST yoga studio. Haven’t found anywhere like it after moving away from Townsville so I continue virtual membership with Live and Breathe. I love the flexibility of online classes despite missing the studio a lot, and I love the range of classes. Allison is a fantastic teacher. I am really enjoying Andi’s Pilates classes too.
